A question Standing Form beginners always ask, "How to remove the distractions ?" Let's use this article to discuss this topic. It is safe to say that you can never completely eliminate distraction from your mind. The more you hint to yourself, the more distracted you become. When you tell yourself "I want to get rid distractions", the behavior itself is a distraction to your peace. So , we should not try to get rid of the distractions , but what to do with the throughts ? Or to say, how to deal with distractions ! From the method , the ancient times , way to deal with distractions , only two categories: inaction and promising .
1. Do Nothing Approach

Do Nothing is hard to describe in detail. All can only be described as close as possible ! Then, how does "Do Nothing approach" deal with distractions? Basically, the principle idea is to let distracting though come and go freely. When we practice standing form, we let it come into our mind, and leave. But it is easy to say than doing. Below, let's go a little more in details
( 1 ) When distractions come, be aware of ; without thinking, i.e. no judgment and so on . No thought, but also awareness.
( 2 ) If be aware of it cannot stop you from thinking more about the distraction though, you move closer to it. You can make yourself become a observer of the thought, but still do not make any judgement and "decision".
( 3 ) If you wait and see , or not, always do " without thinking" , or that start with " Hearts a " promising method started.
In conventional thinking , it is difficult to fully understand. No thought, no one thought , how can we be aware of it ? Awareness without thinking it ? Is the way to Buddhist conventional thinking , it is difficult to go in depth
2. Proactive Approach

Confucianism, Buddhism and so on , various Chinese traditional idealogies , have many theories in guiding believers to deal with distractions in order to keep concentration. The various approaches appear to be different , but the basic principle is the same. In other words, put your concentration at one thought, and stop millions of other thoughts. For example, now , ten thoughts come into your mind , what would you do? According to the principle of this Proactive Approach, the "heart" , or that focus only on one idea , as a result, the other nine ideas will naturally go away. However , due to the fact that distraction is normally a reflection of the subconscious, they are normally your failures, humuliations, desires, frustrations, and so on. So, if you focus on one of them, as is often said in sutra , " Caprice into the shade " , followed by the distractions go. In order to avoid to plunge yourself into this "deep hole", generally , the solution is we artificially creat a throught. Do not think too much about this newly created thought. It can be anything of what you see , hear, and feel with the outside world. Once such a man-made idea is established, we put all the focus on this idea. And we drive away all other distractions
Ten million kinds of methods , sum them up, they are all done through human's six roots. The six roots namely are: the eyes, ears, nose, tongue , body and mind . Without the six roots, what can you do? Nothing! People who practice Qi-Gong call the physical body a husk. But without this "husk", you can not really practice anything! As to every person who practice standing form, for thousands of years , people have developed countless ways to deal with distractions , many of which are left to the descendants. Our modern spiritual practitioners , inheriting these methods , can save a lot of force , directly to their own way , or simply learn later , to create their own way , can be, there is no mystery , really !
